I purchased the Special Edition of this movie recently and couldn’t possess that the audio was monophonic. I was thus pleasantly surprised to peek that in this edition of the DVD they restored the unique multi-channel soundtrack. Even the casual listener will perceive the disagreement immediately.

To my knowledge the movie itself is the same as on the Special Edition (no added or gash scenes) so I won’t extinguish your time commenting on that. I objective wanted to bring attention to the fact that the Deluxe Edition of this movie is the ONLY one any serious movie collector should assume.
“Stand By Me” is a classic coming of age movie about growing up and friendship and the damage of disillusionment when the adults you depend upon let you down. Highly recommended.
In this review I’ll focus mostly on the relationship between the movie and the Stephen King novella it is based on, and the DVD extra material that closes the ring.

The movie “Stand By Me” was made in 1986. It is based on a novella published in 1982 and the chronicle takes status in 1959 (movie) or 1960 (novella) . But the record is timeless – the conflicts and the difficult transition from child to adult apply to every generation.
There is a lot of trivia (pop songs, slang expressions, TV shows, etc.) from 1959/1960 in the movie and the novella, but this doesn’t really anchor the legend to that era. Every generation has it’s believe trivia that is very critical to that generation. But today’s generation can smile at the trivia of 47 years ago and smooth gawk the parallels between that trivia and their (to them) great more astounding trivia.
The movie is based on a novella by Stephen King called “The Body”. This is one of Stephen King’s best stories, and is well worth reading or, if you like audio books, listening to. The audio version lasts almost six hours and is read by Frank Muller. Highly recommended. If you’d select to read the chronicle yourself then you should bewitch the book “Different Seasons”, a collection of four Stephen King novellas including “The Body”.
The movie and the novella are very similar. There are, of course, many miniature differences, for example the town of Castle Rock has been moved from Maine to Oregon, there is more coverage of the older juvenile delinquents and less coverage of Gordie’s stories and of Gordie as an adult, the spot where the bloodsuckers are encountered is different, etc., etc. The biggest dissimilarity is that in the novella Chris is the main protagonist, or hero if you like, while in the movie it is Gordie. Mild, this movie is truer to the written source than most movies based on books are.
So why did Consume Reiner beget these changes, and what on earth did Stephen King consider of them?
Here’s where the magic of DVD extra material comes in. The “Special Edition” (2000) and “Deluxe Edition” (2005) DVDs both include a 35-minute documentary “featurette” called “Walking the Tracks: The Summer of Stand By Me”, which was made in 2000. Stephen King, Steal Reiner and all of the major actors in the movie (except River Phoenix, who died in 1993) participate.
In this documentary film Prefer Reiner tells that he identified personally more with Gordie than Chris, and therefore decided to perform the movie Gordie’s record. And Stephen King says that he respected Recall Reiner’s decision and thinks that “Stand By Me” was the first movie adaptation of his work that really fulfilled the spirit of the tale.
Stephen King also says that many of the things that happen in “The Body” and in “Stand By Me” are things he experienced himself in his childhood. This makes the anecdote somewhat autobiographical, with Gordie being in some ways the young Stephen King. In the novella “The Body” this is quite pronounced in that an adult Gordie is telling the memoir in the first person, and also tells how he’s now become a successful writer of panic books.
So the bottom line is, if you like the movie then read or listen to the novella. And after you’ve read the novella and seen the movie, check out the DVD featurette that ties them together.

I impartial heard on the radio that they have cancelled `The Unit’. I had idea that CBS had more sense than the other spacious three, but apparently not. This past season we watched 8 CBS shows compared to 3 NBC and 2 ABC. Now they have cleave us relieve to 7.
`The Unit’ is a very riveting note. You can’t aid but cheer for the 4 Unit guys. They have the terrorists who are trying to distress America trying to demolish them on one side, the snake-in-the-grass Colonel sabotaging them on the other side and their wives are always in difficulty while they are off saving the country. You can’t benefit but pay attention and care what happens to them. I never doze off or salvage distracted when I’m watching that note. I guess I should say when I archaic to explore that reveal now that it is cancelled. They will probably replace this really moving indicate with some reality present where jerks act like jerks.

I also was disappointed that CBS cancelled The Unit; however, I am hopeful that FOX, TNT, A&E or one of the other cable channels will rob it up. This is a gleaming performance of Antony and Cleopatra….. and I say this as a reader/viewer who normally likes to read but not peer Shakespeare. Janet Suzman as Cleopatra is at least as shapely a Cleopatra as Liz Taylor (and infinitely capable to Leonor Varela’s embarrassingly adolescent portrayal), but Richard Johnson as Antony is so wonderful that you can only mediate of Richard Burton as an unappealing weakling after watching Johnson. What a grand Antony – FINALLY you can start to understand why Cleopatra loved him! And don’t miss a younger Patrick Stewart as a very dramatically effective and racy Enobarbus. This is a film that bears repeated watching; I’ve watched it three times in one week and will undoubtedly thought it far more than most videos on my shelf. The staging and sets aren’t mighty but you don’t even need them because the acting (filmed very closeup) is so satisfactory. This deserves to be a classic. Don’t miss it.
I’ve seen this play on film and on stage, but this British television version is by far the best version I’ve seen. Richard Johnson seems to be EXACTLY the embodiment of Marc Antony that Shakespeare must have envisioned – pure poetry and agony. And Janet Suzman channels Cleopatra in a method that is almost spooky (Cleo lives!) . I also personally adore the residence manufacture, which is solely old to make the mood of the characters and situation. This is like a stage play, in that it allows the viewer to focus on the characters, not on locations (I’ll leave that to the deeply evil movie version that plays the myth out like an over-produced historical document) . Trevor Nunn proves that one doesn’t need lavish productions in order to recreate immense Shakespeare. Unbiased procure some titanic actors on an initiate area and let the magic happen!

What attracted me to this series was the artistic connections to Serial Experiments – Lain, which was an outstanding example of what anime is sterling of out of genre. What kept me from getting to it when it first came out was that, depending on the review I looked at, it either sounded listless or was painted as a ‘magical girl’ fable. Now that I’ve seen this first DVD I can picture that it is neither what I expected nor what the critics reported, but something quite fresh.
A young girl finds herself plummeting through the air only to wake up unexpectedly in a uncommon bed surrounded by people with wings. She discovers that, like her, each has awoken from a dream to accumulate themselves in the Passe Home with no memory of the past. And like them, she grows wings and acquires a halo. The remainder of these four episodes follow Rakka as she adjusts to her original like and discovers the world of the Haibane, the Ragged Home in which they live, and the town of Glie, which forms their boundaries.
There are countless mysteries. Rakka and her friends like, Kuu, Hikari, Kana and Reku, only know the intention things are, but have no notion how this came to be. Thus the origins of the Haibane (charcoal feathers) and their role are mysteries. They exist within the walls of Glie, where no one, Haibane or normal human is allowed to enter the outside world. Only birds and the masked Toga (traders) can to so, and the Toga may not shriek. Amidst this, the Haibane themselves carry on, working in the town and living off its largess with surprising acceptance and a gargantuan deal of charm.

And charm is what this series has a surfeit. The Haibane and the townsfolk all seem bounded together in a supportive fashion, which is almost, a model of what most of us would mediate of as a perfect community. It doesn’t select long before the viewer becomes complete enchanted. Not fair with the chronicle, but the art, acting, and music as well. Despite all the signs that things are not really as they appear you will accumulate yourself hoping that things will go on unbiased as they are, that the glimmer of light here will prevail.
What the future will bring, I can’t say. But I hope we glean add least a few more DVD’s of the tranquility and almost Zen-like atmosphere that permeates these first episodes. This is a graceful memoir that unfolds in the pastel shades of some extraordinary artwork and character accomplish. In any case, I hold you will obtain the originality of the epic and its characters refreshing and worth pursuing.
As an artist I am in care for with this series. The world is richly portrayed, and fresh in it’s blend of asian, european and extraordinary elements. The myth is stupid to execute but in a honorable diagram, there is a gentle, soft telling of a story here which is rare and unusual, and the characters and unfolding residence are better for it. You can’t examine this series without becoming aware of the clear care and devotion the artists have place into it.
This is an animation which evolved from a written narrative, which evolved from a portion of poetry, so maybe there is some literary aspect of it that failed to acquire the Amazon reviewer. But don’t possess it, there is a lot going for Haibane Renmei beyond it’s artwork.

The myth, the characters, and the world they live in have depth and heart. It compares favorably to some of anime’s grand titles, notably “Exciting Away,” “Castle in the Sky,” “Lain,” and “Key the Metal Idol.” If you liked any of these, you will delight in Haibane Renmei. I strongly recommend it.

My 5 year weak LOVES this dvd and plays along with “instruments” she’s made. We finally got her a precise guitar to strum along- piano lessons were already in our plans, so we are thrilled at her interest in all the instruments in the video. There are NO contaminated characters to alarm her (unlike the Country Strawberry Shortcake dvd) and there are suitable lessons about the need to practice to execute perfect. We fancy it!
My daughter loves this DVD. This is a colossal gift for any Strawberry Shortcake fan!

After seeing “The Erotic Witch Project” my ..ahem..interest went up to see more of these horror parodies from Seduction Cinema and director, Bacchus. These vary in quality, of course, like most films of the horror/ erotica/ comedy genre do. This one, however is good in a “bad” way (if that makes sense). Darian Caine is hot and so is the blonde wannabe actress (not that she is a bad actress but she wants to be one in the movie itself!) Anyway, you see a decent “birth of the monster” scene with, another notable scene is the “villagers” scene! That’s a good moment in an homage to the original “Frankenstein” films. If you like lesbians + “Frankenstein” flicks this one is worth a look if you’re a completist. Others may fine it lame.

This miniseries is a marvelous retelling, on film, of the fair unique by D.H. Lawrence, which was banned from his homeland, Britain, and the United States, for thirty years. A few changes were made in the set, as the ending of the book is a long letter by the “lover,” which was not deemed dramatic enough for a film. Also, the state Connie vacationed was changed from Venice to some unidentified European beach, filled with sunshine, unlike the drab Midlands which was the main setting.

Almost every actor personifies to perfection the characters in the book, but the one most exactly like the fresh is the actress who plays Mrs. Bolton, the nurse. Clifford Chatterley (James Wilby),his wife Connie (Joely Richardson), and the Gamekeeper, Oliver Mellors (Sean Bean) are well-behaved as the main characters. I didn’t mediate all the changes were distinguished, but they were minor compared with the over-dramatized ending.
It is impossible for any movie to win the essence of Lawrence’s philosophy, his hatred of novel life and the industrialism that casts a blight on almost all of nature and humanity. In disagreement, the “natural man,” portrayed by the sensual, iconoclastic Mellors, is one of the last, best hopes for spiritual survival. For Lawrence,sex was a sacred thing, so it is doubly ironic that this top-notch work has been banned for so long due to a few Anglo-Saxon words and unequalled descriptions of female sexuality. My advice is to contemplate this magnificent film and then read or re-read an unexpurgated copy of “Lady Chatterley’s Lover.” (Some parts of the film were taken from earlier versions of this harmful fresh, which I have also read, “The First Lady Chatterley” and “John Thomas and Lady Jane.”)

Eventually, after all the formalities– the two are privately invited back to the Secretary’s estate, where they play touch football with the family, have formal dinners, sail out on the boat, & get hit on by the Secretary’s sex starved wife (Jane Seymour) & his homosexual son Todd (Keir O’Donnell).

Its all very funny and silly- but the great chemistry by Wilson and Vaughn helps the film move at a steady pace. The supporting roles of McAdams and Fishler are nicely fleshed out as well. While no means a great movie, “The Wedding Crashers” is quite funny at times, and overall enjoyable.
Some people have called this a raunchy, gross-out comedy; although I noticed nothing of the sort. Besides the dialogue and a few breast shots, theres really nothing raunchy or gross-out about “Wedding Crashers” at all. It certainly wouldnt fall into the category of “Something About Mary” or the “American Pie” movies.
Vaughn and Wilson definitley shine throughout and appear to be having the time of their lives here….
Recommended.

This documentary is well done but it is very narrow in scope. Granddaughter/filmmaker Ivy Meeropol focuses her danger on trying to understand the grandparents she never knew through the eyes of her father Michael, eldest son of the Rosenbergs, his younger brother Robert, and through some of the Rosenberg’s closest surviving friends. A key element is the distance created by all other family members including distant relatives, even to this day.

This documentary assumes the viewer is intimate with the Rosenberg case, the fervor of McCarthyism, and the red dread -at least from the perspective of what the official narrative was. With that assumption in plot she tells the tale from the inside out. This is a arresting side of the myth to yelp and at times a tough film to watch; however, it is not filled with the saccharine sentiment one may demand.
While this documentary is expectedly one-sided, surprisingly it is not totally absent scrutiny. Ivy explores tough questions: Was Julius a communist? Yes. Was he a glimpse? Yes. Did he ever trade any secrets that compromised our national security or resulted in the death of any American? Very hard to pronounce, but probably not. Was Ethel a communist? Well, yes but mostly by association. Was she a dedicated wife and mother? My grasp is that she was more of a dedicated wife then mother, but I may be completely horrible. She was keep in a very tough spot where every choice was a lose/lose. All the government ever really had on her was being real to her husband.

This documentary may well upset supporters who thought the Rosenbergs as leftist martyrs, as well as detractors who condemn them as agents of Stalin. I reflect it is positive that without Ethel’s brother, David Greenglass as a key liar on the stand, a rabid call for the heads of communists, and a very politically charged case, the Rosenbergs would not have been executed. A long prison sentence may well have been more appropriate. As one political commentator pointed out, they died because they refused to confess and name others. Someday, that may well turn out to be the truth.
There is no doubt that Communism -especially any Marxist based communism like Soviet Communism, is quite an atrocity against humanity; dare I say, it may have even been horrible. That said, should the Rosenbergs have died for their actions, or lack of action in the case of Ethel? This documentary will not succor one build the decision either diagram any easier. It will, however, converse the lost record of those most intimately impacted by these executions. I am a strong advocate for the death penalty. However, my situation is mostly philosophical because it should be reserved for only the most tainted of violent criminals and under specific conditions. It is cases like the Rosenberg’s that creates dark confusion, not clarity, for the arguments for and against the death penalty.
For those familiar with the case, this is a ample added dimension to plan a complex and perilous time in our history.
Fifty years after Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed as spies, their granddaughter Ivy Meeropol made this film to understand her grandparents more intimately and humanly.
As a narrator, Meeropol offers charm and charisma. In fact, the whole family seems incredibly normal and, well, nice. Her father and uncle, the Rosenberg sons, survived what many would concept as childhood trauma: reading about their parents in the media, visiting their parents in prison, temporary stays in group homes. They were lucky to live in a pre-pop-psych era and even luckier to be adopted by the loving Meeropols.
The Rosenberg sons always believed in the innocence of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Through release of formerly classified documents, it’s positive that Julius did some sort of spying. But realistically he probably was a dinky fish, in over his head, caught up in the government’s search for a scapegoat.
Sure, Khruschev mentions the Rosenbergs in his biography, and Julius (but not Ethel) had a couple of code names, but another KGB agent came forward gradual in his life to say, “They really didn’t amount to noteworthy.” And another accused party member, Miriam Moskowitz, questions the Venona documents when she’s interviewed: mostly scraps, she says, except for the Rosenbergs’ very complete file.
Ivy’s cousin Rachel, a newly-minted lawyer, summarizes the tragedy succinctly. Even if guilty, Ethel and Julius deserved a blooming trial, and they didn’t procure one. The prosecutor engaged in illegal ex parte (out of court) communication with the reflect. Ethel’s brother David Greenglass has admitted he gave counterfeit testimony. The Rosenbergs were accused of accepting a console table with see equipment; the table turned out to be what they claimed — an ordinary table they bought at Macy’s.
Would the Rosenbergs really have saved their lives if they had turned in their friends? Would they have spent years in prison — perhaps worse than the death sentence? Was their sacrifice pointless?
The true expect should be: Why did they have to design these choices? I recommend watching this DVD along with Capturing the Friedmans, a documentary about a Jewish family accused of child abuse in the 1980’s. Once again, district attorneys offered reduced sentences in exchange for accusations. And over and over again, people accused of drug dealing can catch reduced sentences only by turning in others. Ironically, those improper on the chain often know nobody, or know only undercover agents, so they collect longer sentences.
Originally, Ethel was arrested to motivate Julius to confess. Even today prosecutors mild attack wives in hopes of “softening” a husband, as in the case of one Enron executive. When the husbands don’t crumble, wives who were marginally (or not at all) enthusiastic are punished.
So I maintain this film raises questions about the logistics of contemporary justice. When faced with long prison terms, many people will say anything to achieve themselves and their families. They’ll beget stories, which will become “evidence” against others, often without independent corroboration. Prosecutors seem to have no qualms about punishing innocent people to nudge the guilty.
And jury verdicts often depend not on logic or reason but on whether they like the defendants. They didn’t like Julius and Ethel. They were viewed as hard and unruffled. But most likely they idea the proceedings were ludicrous — the table from Macy’s was bugged? — and never expected to be convicted.
Is this what “innocent till proven guilty” means? Do we want to convict criminals based on coerced testimony? Do we want verdicts based on folkloric beliefs about a defendant’s demeanor? Those are the sincere questions for viewers of this documentary.
