This documentary is well done but it is very narrow in scope. Granddaughter/filmmaker Ivy Meeropol focuses her danger on trying to understand the grandparents she never knew through the eyes of her father Michael, eldest son of the Rosenbergs, his younger brother Robert, and through some of the Rosenberg’s closest surviving friends. A key element is the distance created by all other family members including distant relatives, even to this day.

This documentary assumes the viewer is intimate with the Rosenberg case, the fervor of McCarthyism, and the red dread -at least from the perspective of what the official narrative was. With that assumption in plot she tells the tale from the inside out. This is a arresting side of the myth to yelp and at times a tough film to watch; however, it is not filled with the saccharine sentiment one may demand.

While this documentary is expectedly one-sided, surprisingly it is not totally absent scrutiny. Ivy explores tough questions: Was Julius a communist? Yes. Was he a glimpse? Yes. Did he ever trade any secrets that compromised our national security or resulted in the death of any American? Very hard to pronounce, but probably not. Was Ethel a communist? Well, yes but mostly by association. Was she a dedicated wife and mother? My grasp is that she was more of a dedicated wife then mother, but I may be completely horrible. She was keep in a very tough spot where every choice was a lose/lose. All the government ever really had on her was being real to her husband.

This documentary may well upset supporters who thought the Rosenbergs as leftist martyrs, as well as detractors who condemn them as agents of Stalin. I reflect it is positive that without Ethel’s brother, David Greenglass as a key liar on the stand, a rabid call for the heads of communists, and a very politically charged case, the Rosenbergs would not have been executed. A long prison sentence may well have been more appropriate. As one political commentator pointed out, they died because they refused to confess and name others. Someday, that may well turn out to be the truth.

There is no doubt that Communism -especially any Marxist based communism like Soviet Communism, is quite an atrocity against humanity; dare I say, it may have even been horrible. That said, should the Rosenbergs have died for their actions, or lack of action in the case of Ethel? This documentary will not succor one build the decision either diagram any easier. It will, however, converse the lost record of those most intimately impacted by these executions. I am a strong advocate for the death penalty. However, my situation is mostly philosophical because it should be reserved for only the most tainted of violent criminals and under specific conditions. It is cases like the Rosenberg’s that creates dark confusion, not clarity, for the arguments for and against the death penalty.

For those familiar with the case, this is a ample added dimension to plan a complex and perilous time in our history.

Fifty years after Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed as spies, their granddaughter Ivy Meeropol made this film to understand her grandparents more intimately and humanly.

As a narrator, Meeropol offers charm and charisma. In fact, the whole family seems incredibly normal and, well, nice. Her father and uncle, the Rosenberg sons, survived what many would concept as childhood trauma: reading about their parents in the media, visiting their parents in prison, temporary stays in group homes. They were lucky to live in a pre-pop-psych era and even luckier to be adopted by the loving Meeropols.

The Rosenberg sons always believed in the innocence of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Through release of formerly classified documents, it’s positive that Julius did some sort of spying. But realistically he probably was a dinky fish, in over his head, caught up in the government’s search for a scapegoat.

Sure, Khruschev mentions the Rosenbergs in his biography, and Julius (but not Ethel) had a couple of code names, but another KGB agent came forward gradual in his life to say, “They really didn’t amount to noteworthy.” And another accused party member, Miriam Moskowitz, questions the Venona documents when she’s interviewed: mostly scraps, she says, except for the Rosenbergs’ very complete file.

Ivy’s cousin Rachel, a newly-minted lawyer, summarizes the tragedy succinctly. Even if guilty, Ethel and Julius deserved a blooming trial, and they didn’t procure one. The prosecutor engaged in illegal ex parte (out of court) communication with the reflect. Ethel’s brother David Greenglass has admitted he gave counterfeit testimony. The Rosenbergs were accused of accepting a console table with see equipment; the table turned out to be what they claimed — an ordinary table they bought at Macy’s.

Would the Rosenbergs really have saved their lives if they had turned in their friends? Would they have spent years in prison — perhaps worse than the death sentence? Was their sacrifice pointless?

The true expect should be: Why did they have to design these choices? I recommend watching this DVD along with Capturing the Friedmans, a documentary about a Jewish family accused of child abuse in the 1980’s. Once again, district attorneys offered reduced sentences in exchange for accusations. And over and over again, people accused of drug dealing can catch reduced sentences only by turning in others. Ironically, those improper on the chain often know nobody, or know only undercover agents, so they collect longer sentences.

Originally, Ethel was arrested to motivate Julius to confess. Even today prosecutors mild attack wives in hopes of “softening” a husband, as in the case of one Enron executive. When the husbands don’t crumble, wives who were marginally (or not at all) enthusiastic are punished.

So I maintain this film raises questions about the logistics of contemporary justice. When faced with long prison terms, many people will say anything to achieve themselves and their families. They’ll beget stories, which will become “evidence” against others, often without independent corroboration. Prosecutors seem to have no qualms about punishing innocent people to nudge the guilty.

And jury verdicts often depend not on logic or reason but on whether they like the defendants. They didn’t like Julius and Ethel. They were viewed as hard and unruffled. But most likely they idea the proceedings were ludicrous — the table from Macy’s was bugged? — and never expected to be convicted.

Is this what “innocent till proven guilty” means? Do we want to convict criminals based on coerced testimony? Do we want verdicts based on folkloric beliefs about a defendant’s demeanor? Those are the sincere questions for viewers of this documentary.

Deep Star Six is a fun monster movie. I am really surprised that it got a DVD release. Too terrible the DVD is not up to the high standard. Elephantine hide only, no subtitling option, no Dolby 5.1 but the describe quality is OK better than the veteran image entertainment LD. The chronicle is about an underwater research facility attacked by a giant sea monster. Nothing special about the sage and the special effects also not very generous but is has enough suspence for this genre. Worth a gawk.

1989 was the year of deep sea movies (THE ABYSS, LEVIATHON to name a couple) . DEEP STAR SIX reached the theaters first. A completely forgettable ALIEN(by the sea) ripoff with a considerable performance by Miguel Ferrer as Snyder. When this reviewer first saw this film with a bunch of drinking buddies,we started calling the’Snyder’(Ferrer) character ‘Gilligan’ (as in GILLIGAN’S ISLAND) because the character kept on screwing everything up. The film is unintentionally made droll because of Ferrer’s character (along with the ineptitude of the rest of the characters and the rubber kindly sea monster) so the film has some merits. A deep sea missile heinous with a bunch of engineers and technicians disturb an ocean monster out of its hibernation. Perhaps the creature is starving from its long sleep. The rest of the premise is the garden variety set as each character is oft by the monster one by one (some of the killings are a bit hideous) . Eventually one or two members will outsmart the monster and derive a draw to slay it. Not considerable here except for some bright casting of actors playing out of type (i.e. Greg Evigan and Nia Peeples), a couple of intense scenes, decent spot designs, and the films’ non-deliberate humor.

I, too, have experienced the same spot with Disc 2 described by others. The quality looks choppy. If I had never seen the exhibit before, I would have opinion that it was filmed on improper quality film, rather than videotape (which was broken-down for Home Improvement for all eight seasons) .

I also don’t like the novel packaging – as others have also mentioned.

But I discovered something else tonight. I was watching “I Was a teenage Taylor” – the Halloween episode, on Disc 1. There’s an entire scene missing! It’s the scene where Larry (the “Halloween Guy”) shows up at Tool Time and talks with Tim and Al. That scene sets up the whole episode, and yet they’ve completely removed it from the DVD version! My 12-year-old son noticed it immediately, and to verify it, we got out the VHS tape of the episode we recorded off of TV in syndication. Definite enough. The scene had been excised from the DVD version. So far as I’ve seen, this is the only episode that isn’t complete.

Too dreadful this 5-star prove got such a 3-star DVD release. Don’t obtain me wrong: I’m gay to have it, and I thought on completing my Home Improvement DVD region when the final two seasons are released. But I impartial accept that my enthusiasm has been dampened because of these problems with the 6th season.

I believe seasons 1-5 and am very cheerful with their quality and very COMPLETE episodes.

Season six was only in my collection for about 24 hours, I returned it to the retailer for a fat refund!

“The Complete sixth Season”??? I contemplate Mr. Tim Allen himself would be disappointed to learn that more than a few scenes had been omitted from many episodes in the sixth boxed situation. All of the episodes had scenes that had been re-edited. A few to the extent that they recede to shaded between dialog! It’s like a stand-up comedian telling the wind-up of a joke, then walking off the stage before delivering the punch-line.

Compare Prices on Final Fantasy – The Spirits Within

‘Final Fantasy’ is a computer game that has gone through countless versions and editions. Taken as a whole, this mythos is probably one of the best know games in its genre. It is sure from the beginning of this film that Sony and Hironbu Sakaguchi (producer, director, and writer) were intent on topping an already vivid history of graphic accomplishments. In a sense, ‘The Spirits Within’ represents a portion of history in the making. It is the first film that presents a startling approximation of life using only automation.

The position is simple. An asteroid falling to earth carries within it a host of phantom creatures that seem hell crooked on destroying earthly life. Civilization has been reduced to living in shielded enclaves, and it is only a matter of time before the planet becomes a fearful wasteland. Aki Ross and her mentor, Dr. Sid, are working on the creation of a neutralizing ‘wave’ based on the eight basic phantom life forms. General Hein does not trust Dr. Sid’s theories about a Gaia, or planetary spirit, and wants to spend a sizable orbital laser cannon to demolish the current meteor, possible destroying the earth in the process. The conflict between these points of thought and their shattering effects on the planet are the meat of the film.

Captain Gray Edwards, once Aki’s lover, crystallizes this struggle between the material world of violent reaction and the spiritual world of growth and synthesis. The film plays a bit like an evolved ‘Starship Troopers.’ In many ways, it presents the same visual image, and deals with the same issues. The predicament for the director and the viewer is to win past the shapely graphic work to experience the abiding spiritual faith that is its meaning. Ironically, the film itself is a metaphor for the issues it expresses.

It is almost futile to discuss the film’s animation and perform. They are so far above what we are conventional to that the required superlatives sound trite. In essence, the animation staff location out to gain something that is even more actual than life, and to a vast extent, they have succeeded. This hyperrealism, combined with an almost ballet like feeling of choreography manufacture a sense of moment that makes this seem far more than an action film. The overall animation is carefully balanced so as to support the focus on the characters. Even so, this film has such a sensory do that the viewer is tempted to forget the location and simply discover the shroud.

The valuable DVD provides the film and a whole space of commentaries (directing crew, animation and staging, composer, and production staff), plus the usual trailers, etc. In the special edition, a second disk adds an extensive ‘Making of…’ segment, the entire screenplay and some analysis of character, vehicle, and prop obtain. Technically, this is an notable film, despite its simplistic situation and characters. For the first time, the definition of what is acting and what is animation is being challenged in a belief provoking fashion.

The first time I fired up FF7 on my playstation console 5 years ago, I marveled at the opening cinematics. At that point, I belief it would be the coolest thing if someone made a movie unbiased like it. On July 11 at 4:30pm I witnessed that dream advance upright.

I could say it was all I was expecting and more, but that wouldn’t be entirely right. The games took 40-50+ hours to complete with a sage that had numerous twists to the space and character developement that went far beyond some bestselling novels. While I mediate it would be titanic to ogle a 6 hour Final Fantasy movie that had such an intricate region, I realize that would be unrealistic for a feature film. All things considered, I reflect Square did an outstanding job compressing the account into the time allotted.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Final Fantasy – The Spirits Within! Click Here

The script could have been written a limited bit better, but I contemplate it was written the plot it was so the average movie-goer would withhold up with the position. I know I didn’t have any wretchedness following Dr. Sid’s theories about Gaia and what the Phantom’s really were. But that could’ve been from playing the games.. I saw sort of the notion in FF7, with everyone and everything having a spirit.

The cg was extraordinary and tte physics were.. well, discontinuance. Although I mediate in 65 years, we may be able to bend the laws of physics a bit more, so this could possibly waste up mimicing genuine life in 2065. I’ve read some film critics comment about the lack of consistency with the Phantoms, how they can go through walls and suck the life out of someone, yet can be harmed by musty weapons. Those guns didn’t scrutinize broken-down to me… energy weapons would have the finish they did. Opinion: those film critics who commented about that didn’t know what they were talking about.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and I intend to witness it a few more times before it leaves theatres. This quite possibly gets my vote for the Best Movie of All time.

Tommy Lee Jones, James Garner, and Donald Sutherland are his partners in crime, and the situations and antics they derive into are hilarious. This is a well acted film with a stellar cast. How can you go ghastly with a movie that stars Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, and James Garner? Deftly directed by Clint Eastwood, it is a well made, racy film.

The area revolves around a crisis in plot that is triggered when a Russian satellite malfunctions and is due to collide with Earth in densely populated areas, unless someone can repair it in plot. The plight is that the technology on the satellite is passe and no one knows how to tackle it except the inventor of that technology, retired Air Force pilot Frank Corvin, played by Clint Eastwood.

Aren’t heist movies mammoth? Warm and familiar like a comfy passe armchair, they are one of the oldest and (if done well) most delicious film genres around. You can sit wait on at the movie theatre with your popcorn in one hand or at home in front of the TV with a beer, pleasurable in the knowledge that some craggy, world weary weak thief plot on retirement will be persuaded to do one last job, with a rookie understudy whom he doesn’t trust, on a job which you unbiased know wont go as smoothly as planned.

The Glean is no different in that respect in that it stars Robert De Niro as a craggy traditional world weary thief, persuaded to prefer on one last high risk job before retiring. Ed Norton plays the rookie understudy scamming his employers by posing as Brian, a man with a disability and learning difficulties. Of course Robert De Niro’s character Gash, always works alone and doesn’t trust anybody but he is persuaded by his camp bloated obsolete fence, Max (Marlon Brando) to work with Jack (Ed Norton) . You examine Max (Brando) is in up to his eyeballs in gambling debts and is likely to be forcibly shuffled off this mortal coil unless he comes up with the money, Jack (Norton) is working on the inside and Gash (De Niro) is the only man with the knowledge and the skills to collect the job done.

Like most heist movies it’s a bit of a listless burn get up, it’s all about building up the tension until showtime. Inevitably there are a few scares along the draw and Director Frank Oz (yes that’s true Yoda, or at least the speak of Yoda) does a decent job in building up the tension. Of course one of the mountainous draws of this movie is Frank Oz’s coup in getting Brando, De Niro and Norton all on conceal at the same time in the same movie. Brando was in his day was considered to be the world’s greatest living actor, a mantle De Niro has carried for the past 20/25 years. Edward Norton is not far slack and is generally considered by many (including myself) to be the greatest actor of his generation on the succor of colossal films (American History X, Fight Club) and stout performances (Primal Anxiety, Rounders, Keeping The Faith, The People Versus Larry Flynt, Everybody Says I Esteem You) . Robert De Niro is of course reliably superior but not at his shimmering best and it is Ed Norton in the dual role of Jack and Brian who has the meatiest piece and adds some energy and vitality to the whole production. Marlon Brando’s role however, is something of an oddity. It’s not distinguished more than a cameo and its something that he could do in his sleep, which is unprejudiced as well because it looks like that’s exactly what he did.

If there are any criticisms to be levelled at The Bag it has to be on the basis that it really is a by the numbers crime caper and lacks none of the originality or vitality of something like Reservoir Dogs and nor does it really prefer pudgy advantage of its AAA list cast. The opening sequences whilst inviting, perhaps lack the action and intensity you might wish, although they do encourage as an insight into Jack’s MO (he always works outside the country, he always plans meticulously, doesn’t rob chances and is never greedy) . That said The Salvage is scrumptious first and foremost for its genuine cast and the opportunity to seek them fragment camouflage time. Secondly the last forty minutes of the movie where we eventually win to gape the heist are excellent; the heist is sizable edge of your seat stuff and there are plenty of unexpected twists and turns and an proper climax. Ultimately though, you are left with the feeling that you’ve seen this all before and done better. It’s more like that dependable frail arm chair, warm and comfortable rather than modern and intelligent. That said it’s an appetizing chronicle. Obliging rather than immense BUT tranquil well worth a peer.

There’s a fence, a weary aged safecracker, and an interested outsider. There’s a notable whatsit in the Montreal Custom House that’s guarded as if it were the crown jewels. It ain’t quite that, but it is a many-centuries obsolete scepter that’s worth tens of millions of dollars. It’s got `last large score’ written all over it. The involved young one has an assistant janitor job at the Custom House and is in the perfect situation to case the joint, earn the schematics, chop the video feed, what have you.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Score! Click Here

Sound familiar? Assign for a raze game twist or two THE Acquire is exquisite grand the same heist movie you’ve seen time and again. It’s a strong enough memoir that doesn’t stray too far at all from the tried and good. What sets this movie apart is its cast. To say THE Come By is actor rich is an understatement. Its three leads – Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, and Ed Norton – have all been hailed the greatest actors of their generation. Brando plays the fence, De Niro the mature pro who wants to pull off one last job before calling it quits, and Norton the neophyte looking for respect. Director Frank Oz wisely highlights characters and the `job’ intrudes only when important. With a different cast I probably wouldn’t have liked this one nearly as worthy as I did, but Brando, De Niro, and Norton are all on their game and a joy to glance.

The special features includes trailers, a short `making of’ feature, a commentary track with Oz and cinematographer Buy Hahn and three or four unused scenes, one of which features Brando and De Niro improvising a scene. The track lasts about four minutes and shows the two going through the same little or so long bit of business three times. I’ve never seen two actors of this caliber building a scene before, and it’s piquant to seek them hit the same marks – Will you do it? , six million, I always pay your elegant – while shading each occupy differently. It’s my popular four minutes on the dvd.

What the heck, heist movies have been done but they’re fun. The characters in this movie are layered and engrossing. A strong recommendation for THE Secure.

I hardly ever write reviews, but I am writing in hopes that someone in power at Anchor Bay might read this. I have bought many, many Anchor Bay/Starz products over the years and have always been a gigantic fan. Ok, unlike the other reviewers I have no asthetic gripes with this packaging. I always occupy the DVDs out of wierd packaging and effect them in something that fits the shelf anyway. However, I received this station yesterday, and it unprejudiced made me sunless. The DVDs are floating around completely unprotected inside the “skull” which means every single one of them is scratched. A few of them are badly scratched all over, while ALL of them have circular scratches (typically the worst kind of scratches) around the the entire outer half-inch or so of the disc. Additionally, instead of including all of the individual episode discs like the last box place, some of the discs are double sided with an episode on each side! Why? So the manufacturer could reduce some more corners on an already horribly place together dwelling?

I foolishly assumed that, as with the season one area, this box would possess someting extra that was not available in the individual episode DVDs. It does not. So, if you have the individual episode DVDs, I would recommend sticking with those. However, if you don’t mind spending intention too mighty money for a pile of pre-scratched, dual-sided DVDs then this box position is the design to go. Not only do you not obtain anything extra, you secure something far, far less for your money this time around. Shame on you Anchor Bay. I hope everyone returns these as I understanding to do.

The fact that I am able to type a review here at Amazon for The Guild is kind of unbelievable. Considering this, the first season, was funded by Felicia Day with donations/help from the audience and considering how unlikely such a collaboration is, it’s astonishing that the indicate has become such a hit, spawning additional seasons and a more mainstream acceptance. Not that it should be very surprising since it’s probably one of the funniest and heartfelt shows I’ve seen on either the web or TV.

Stepping wait on a bit, The Guild is a note about…well, an online guild of friends who live in the local residence but only know each other through their online alter-egos. Cyd/Codex (Felicia Day) is struggling with what appears to be an addiction to their fresh MMO, dealing with a psychiatrist who hangs up on her and a gnome warlock who shows up at her front door, thinking they are romantically eager.

What works for The Guild is the fact that the characters are so gleaming and played pitch perfectly by the entire cast. Yes, they verge on walking stereotypes, but the hilartiy and the esteem for these people (some of the kinds of people I know personally) gives the point to a worthy needed heart. What’s colossal is that, while a gaming geek will rep the most enjoyment out of the point to, I have shown this to friends who assume gaming is petite to Rock Band and they, too, kept coming wait on, week after week, to behold it.

You can go concept these shows online, peaceful, either via the website, MSN or Xbox Live. I’m personally satisfied that there’s now another option in this Amazon queer. Give it a chance. I bet you’ll approach aid laughing.

The Guild is a comedic gem lovingly directed at and about geeks and gamers, but the cast is so expansive together and Felicia Day (Codex) is so charming and resplendent that this point to would be hard for anybody NOT to fancy. Filled with in-jokes and geeky subtext, every episode is an absolute riot to recognize over and over again.

For a blind person, it would seem like a dream near fair to have their peruse restored. But what if it came with a imprint? That is the thought leisurely the Pang Brothers’ “The Leer” (“Jian gui”), one of the most minimalistic — and chilling — dread movies in years.

Wong Kar Mun (Angelica Lee) has been blind since she was two, but a cornea transplant restores her study. At first she can only gawk blurry figures. But then, Mun sees shaded phantoms leading away the spirits of the dreary. Even worse, she sees the ghosts of suicides lingering on, doomed to uncover their deaths until they are build to rest.

Horrified by this, she goes to her psychotherapist Dr. Wah (Lawrence Chou) for assist. Stretching professional ethics, the lovestruck doctor manages to pick up the records of the donor, and they go to examine her family in a rural village. And guided by dreams and visions, Mun learns of the tragic life of a girl, Ling, who could foresee death…

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Eye! Click Here

If you like serial killers, buckets of blood and screaming blondes in your dread movies, don’t sight “The Seek.” As a scare movie, it will be too subtle, too still, and too corpulent of shiny questions about life and death.

There are only a couple of staunch “alarm” moments in here, where things gaze grotesque. Most of the time, it’s psychological in nature; at one point, we hear that suicides are doomed to disclose their deaths — it’s horrifying enough to peep someone killing themselves, but doing it over and over? Even worse, we gape this in action.

And the Pang Bros. handle this wonderfully. Many of the ghosts appear and vanish rapidly, giving a shock to the audience; at other times, they gape the changes that look brings to Mun’s life. But at the same time, the Bros. add a softer side to this movie, such as Ling’s reconciliation with her mother. It’s a credit to the Bros. that this is touching, not syrupy.

A lot of the impact of the film can be credited to Lee and Chou. Lee especially, for showing a range of emotions, including joy, inconvenience, hysteria and still acceptance. Boyishly comely Chou balances out Mun in a very believable, by merely being a pillar of strength and believing her seemingly crazy stories. The only flaw is that he seems to topple for her too fleet.

The DVD also comes with a very insightful featurette, which sheds a lot of light on the film’s background and production. The actors talk about their characters, the directors talk about creating gas explosions and ghosts. And we hear from the people whose stories inspired the ghosts in this film, such as the guy standing in the highway.

With capable acting and a really chilling script, “The Inspect” is one of the rarest kinds of terror — the kind that horrifies the mind, rather than the stomach. Mesmerizing and really spooky.

I cherish being alarmed. I started watching panic movies as far relieve as 4 years musty. I even made it a point to rent every terror movie at both of my local video stores. And if a movie gave me nightmares for 2 days, I wanted to gain one that would obtain it 3. It could’ve been anything. Later on I’d realise I was exposed not only from the standard American fright legends like Romero to Raimi, but also Bava and Argento from Italy and of course Hitchcock.

While that was a respectable long hasten, I became desensitised at a fairly early age by slasher and/or gore films. Only few films would leave lasting impressions on my psyche. Then I came across asian alarm. Japanese staples like Ringu and Ju On were instantly in a different league. The off kilter timing and sincerity in telling a chronicle wouldn’t impartial apprehension the fairly jaded alarm movie fan in me, it would shake every fibre of my being. The paranoia I felt after seeing movies like Begotten or Silence of the Lambs or even the last scene in Blair Witch could not compare to the atmosphere built by the aforementioned movies. With Asia restoring my faith in the genre, I branched out even further. And this is where The Observe comes in.

The Notice is the scariest movie I’ve ever seen in my life. Short of spoilers, that’s the best description I can give. For what it is, it’s the perfect movie in it’s genre. It literally immerses you into the atmosphere and spits you out without a moment’s scrutinize. I personally felt like a deer in headlights each time, stronger than the last. And when it’s all over, life itself can feel like a nightmare. At least for a while. I no longer admire being unnerved. I am simply troubled.

Watch this movie at 2 in the morning alone with the lights off.

In one of his best movies, Elvis Presley plays a heavenly, bonafide jerk who, on route to his next job, accidentally encounters Barbara Stanwyck, her even jerkier husband, and her radiant step-daughter (Joan Freeman) . Maggie (Stanwyck) decides to let Elvis become her dying carnival’s roustabout, but he does more. When Elvis sings, well, you know what happens! The carnival begins to attract attention and the money starts rolling in. But when Elvis is offered a bigger salary by another carnie, he is torn between the prospects of a better life and his loyalty to Stanwyck, and particularly, her step-daughter. Every song in the film is “a astounding, extraordinary, incredible, fantastic” experience. Elvis’s fun rockin’ with “Poision Ivy League” to his romantic wooing of Freeman in a ferris wheel, to the upbeat “It’s Carnival Time” the spacious production number, “Runt Egypt”, and the final, memorable number, “And The Whole World’s Gonna Be Mine”. And Stanwyck is unprejudiced stout as the good-hearted carnie whom Elvis learns to trust. You’ll have fun with this movie or capture it for the Elvis fan in your family… “be a substantial shot for a dollar, it’s Carnival Time!”

Although rather formulaic, Roustabout is one of Elvis’ better outings. I really treasure this film. I have to disagree with the reviewer who thinks the songs were forgettable. I found them quite memorable and witty. Example: Poison Ivy League, boys in that Ivy League, give me an itch — those “sons of the rich.” Granted, the song needs to be understood within the context of the movie, but for a 1964 Elvis film that’s rather tongue in cheek! Roustabout — “I’m unbiased a Roustabout, drifting from town to town, no job can contain me down…” It’s a tall number that really introduces us to Elvis’ free-wheeling character (a space up for the movie position) And of course who can forget “Petite Eva.” Minute Eva came out struttin wearin nuttin but a button and bow… It’s an early favorite 50s tune that meshed within the Carny atmosphere of the film. And even It’s Carnival Time although very simplistic is a catchy cramped tune. Stanwyck is substantial and so is Leif Ericson, playing a doubting dolting father-type, although I honest don’t know how Elvis can punch him out one diminutive and then suddenly they’re pals the next (but that’s formula) . Explore it’s fun, the tunes are peppy, he gets the girl what more can you glean outta of an Elvis 60s movie!
