Ten SEO Rules we use

Rule One: Do not try to cheat the spiders and search engines. When they do catch you and they will. You will be kicked out of the search engine. A lot of time was wasted. Focus on the clean and user friendly websites with the following rules applied.

Rule Two: Keywords – Too many people focus on keywords that are extremely popular in searches, but have nothing to do with their website or page. This is actually a penalty. Make sure your keywords are in your title, description and most of all your copy.

Rule Three: Content and Clean HTML – Your content must be clean and written in error free HTML. You want to make sure you are using your tags: UL for lists, H tags for head and subheads, and STRONG for bold text. The spiders eat this up. Your content again, must match your Meta tags: Description, Title and keywords.

Rule Four – you’re Home Page – if you understand the first three rules, then four will bring it all together. Your home page is your store front. The home page should not be complicated and mashed up. It should tell the user who just clicked on your link, why they should stay on your page. When users get confused and have to search all over your site for a reason to stay – You just lost them.

Tell the user who you are and what you do. When a user is searching for a puppy – they want to know they are at a site that is all about puppies. They do not want to go to a site, pushing keywords on Puppies, and end up on a Kitten site.

Make sure your home page summarizes the rest of your website. Bring visitors into your home page and have very user friendly navigation to ensure the user finds exactly what they are looking for.

Rule Five – Your internal links should also be your keywords and description. Too many people take short cuts on their links. If you do a search in Google, you will see keywords bolded in the linking url.

Example: http://www.xxxxx.com/aboutus

Change this to http://www.xxxx.com/about-solar-hosting

http://www.xxxxx.com/linuxh1

Change to http://www.xxxxx.com/linux-solar-hosting-plan

Rule Six – Page Titles – many people add the same title, keywords and description to each page. This is not SEO. If you have read over the previous rules, then you would come to the conclusion. Each page should be unique to the content on that page. Make sure the title, keywords and description reflect the content on the page. Spiders Love this.

Rule Seven – Alt Tags – you want to make sure you use alt tags with all images added to the website. You want to make sure that the Alt words match the picture. You just do not want to through keywords in the alt tag. Example: good: “View of Florence from mountain” not: “Image”, or “Italy”

Rule Eight: Site Maps – all of your website should have an xml site map that describes the stricter of your website. You can then upload your site map in Google. There are websites that will create your XML site map for free. About site maps from Google: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=40318
