Thousands of dollars of illegally purchased merchandise is being held at the Bryant Police Department. A pawn shop employee told police a customer came in attempting to use multiple fake credit cards. Police say it’s all a part of an elaborate scheme to trick stores into using fake credit cards and take off with thousands of dollars of merchandise.

” I didn’t really think anything was suspicious at first. He just seemed like a nice guy, really talkative and friendly too, ” said Gary Northrup of Bryant Car Stereo and Pawn.

Surveillance video shows 28 year old Patrick Long at work. Store owners say he came in to buy $850 worth of stereo equipment.

“I got one card. The numbers weren’t raised or anything, it was just kind of flat. It was a weird card. I’d never seen one of those before,” Northrup said.

The card didn’t go through.

“I tried to swipe it, it wouldn’t swipe.”

He pulled out a few others. They all came back declined. That’s when the real credit card owner in Texas called the store saying someone just tried to use his card.

“That’s when I knew something was going on,” Northrup said.

➤Recession Boom is fueling insurance fraud

Filed under: Insurance Fraud — fraudreportonline @ 6:14 pm

The sour economy is producing a bumper crop of cash-strapped consumers, business owners and shady agents who’re fueling a wave of insurance fraud that’s keeping regulators and law enforcement officials busy from coast to coast.

Whether it’s worthless health plans peddled by fax, staged auto accidents, arson or slip-and-fall accidents at the local mall, insurance fraud of all kinds is booming in the recession and consumers are paying the price in higher premiums.

To keep it in perspective, roughly 48 million insurance claims are made each year in the U.S. and less than one-quarter of 1 percent are referred to the nonprofit National Insurance Crime Bureau for investigation of possible fraud.

Last year, that amounted to just more than 85,000 questionable claims. That was up 14 percent from nearly 75,000 in 2008, however.

5 Wisconsin residents in all, have been charged with criminal counts of voter fraud in the Nov. 2008 general election, state Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced Monday.

2 of those charged — Maria Miles, 36, of Milwaukee, and Kevin Clancy, 26, of Racine — worked for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), the embattled community organizing group.

” The complaint alleges that Miles and Clancy submitted multiple voter registration applications for the same individuals, and also were part of a scheme in which they and other ( special registration deputies ) registered each other to vote multiple times in order to meet voter registration quotas imposed by ACORN, ” the Van Hollen news release says.

Both were charged with one felony count.
