I watched this doc obsessively on my local cable movies channel. Unfortunately, the version of the film on the DVD is rather different — most noticably that most (if not all) of the soundtrack is missing. I actually bought this DVD alive to to know what song was on while they talked about “Mean Streets” — but the only licensed music on the entire DVD is Born To Be Wild and the Jaws theme. I’m very disappointed on this regard.

But, don’t gather me substandard here — this is a documentary worth seeing (and perhaps owning if you are a film buff rather than music buff) . There is some wonderful archival footage and home movies from the participants, and the absorbing transitions of movie posters and stills are very well done. The advise is most likely not a surprise as everyone knows the majority of the films discussed (and the stout financial or artistic results) . It’s the backstory and the who did what with whom to allow these films to be made or released that provides interest.

Befriend to the DVD… one contented addition is that there is a bulky second disc of interviews. Very dry, but there is some keen extra information / fable tidbits and an interview with the author of the book which probably would have been welcome in the film (but wouldn’t have fit it’s structure perhaps) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream Easy Riders, Raging Bulls! Click Here

I would recommend this DVD for film buffs and baby-boomers in general… any chance the “Current Soundtrack” might be released separately? Or perhaps the 97 tiny “as seen on tv” edition as a DVD instead of this 118 cramped version?

This was one of the better documentaries that I’ve seen this year. It has some superb interviews with the likes of John Milius and Dennis Hopper. It really wasn’t about the sixties or seventies as grand as it was about the age of directorial freedom in film. Before I saw it, I knew very shrimp about Sam Peckinpah or Martin Scorcese. They are/were involving people as well as artists. The same can be said about George Lucas. “Easy Riders…” explains quite well the reasons why he went into semi-retirement after “Star Wars.” For any film buff, you’ll be rewarded greatly by letting this play for two hours.

Klaus Kinski. Christopher Lee. Karin Dor. Harald Reinl. Joe D’Amato. Talk about your cream of the Euro-Horror carve!

A loose adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Pit and the Pendulum,” THE TORTURE CHAMBER OF DR. SADISM might unbiased be the least fitting of this film’s many alternate titles (CASTLE OF THE WALKING Insensible, BLOOD OF THE VIRGINS, etc.), but you can’t verbalize it’s one that really sticks in the brain!

With strong nods to classic Hammer films and the Roger Corman/Vincent Imprint Poe adaptations, this is a movie with cobwebby atmosphere to spare. It’s an veteran jumpy castle memoir, with Christopher Lee as an undead aristocrat seeking revenge against an appropriately dashing leading man (mature TARZAN Lex Barker) and a suitably aesthetic damsel in damage (Karin Dor) . And if that doesn’t do it for you, the fantastic and interpret sets and locations will have you wishing they collected made ‘em like they aged to.

(Be certain to witness for the visually ravishing scene of the coach hurry through the timorous forest surrounding Lee’s castle; these few minutes of camouflage time have sown the seeds of many a nightmare since 1967!)

DEATH SMILES ON A MURDERER shares several Gothic elements with DR. SADISM, but its screenplay may well have been written in collaboration with a Cuisinart! I’m positive there’s a coherent storyline in there somewhere, but you’ll have your work crop out for you piecing it together.

Not that you’ll care; this is WTF filmmaking at its finest. Before the movie’s over, people will be walled up in cellars, thrown from high castles, hung on hooks like customary coats, gorily mutilated by possessed cats, and raised from the slow only to be killed all over again. And if at times it’s a challenge sorting out exactly what’s going on, its sleazy/creepy atmosphere and bizarre and lyrical imagery more than fabricate the head-trip worth taking.

Old school film buffs will simply be gay to come by such delicate prints of these films on DVD. But unusual converts to legendary filmmakers like Mario Bava or fans of Tim Burton’s frequent consume of Gothic Fear elements will bag this pairing an honorable demolish course in how it was done in the heyday of Euro-Horror.

I am not going to review this because I have not seen it yet — I’ll say upfront that the reason I gave it 4 stars is because Amazon does not let you post a review unless you rate it — 4 stars is what I gave this company’s last release. But this DVD is level-headed a great week and a half away from release. If not more, as I hear through the retailer grapevine it may be a week slow. Which makes me wonder what the hell this guy Nyland “Squonkmatic” is talking about? How could he have even seen it? His review is dated early February! Yarn House, to my knowledge, operates out of L.A. and this guy hails from abet East. Plus tag, his review is an overly personal and pissed-off attack on the company like he has an axe to grind. Chronicle House puts out alot of stuff that is in public domain, as do companies like BCI, Alpha Video, VCI and Retromedia, to name only a few. DVDs are not bootlegs if they are DVDs of movies in the public domain. And these two movies are most assuredly in the public domain. Brand the numerous other DVD releases of DR.SADISM. DEATH SMILES likewise saw many different incarnations from different VHS companies (as well as several different theatrical releases from improper budget theatrical distributors in the ’70s & ’80s), though to my knowledge it has yet to prove up in America on DVD — probably because there are no decent elements around. Sage House has build out alot of fun stuff and don’t deserve the unpleasant rap. Word going around at places like the Grindhouse shows at the Fresh Beverly and Cinefamily theaters in Los Angeles is that there is dreadful blood between a company called Code Red and Narrative House because Fable House establish their public domain DVD out of BARN OF THE NAKED Tiresome before Code Red got their public domain version out. Waannhh!!! Baby wants its bottle!! Talk about a tempest in a teapot. I do not know any of the Myth House crowd other than to nod to them if I spy them out at the movies. But this kind of certain competitor bashing makes me angry. Hey, Amazon! Wake up! How does this S. Nyland guy’s review fit into your “review guidelines”, especially when he (or she) obviously hasn’t even seen the DVD yet! The date they posted their review should have been a listless giveaway. When this is finally available I’ll review it again — but based on actually WATCHING it. I may give it 1 star or I may give it 5 stars, but at least I will have SEEN it first before passing judgement. One thing I will say for it legal now though, if this is qualified visual quality I’ll be gratified. These are two of my approved Euro Gothic panic pix and it is a knowing notion to save them together on a double feature. So far, so helpful.

I am a fan of Ryuhei Kitamura, I loved AZUMI, VERSUS, THE MESSENGER and even ALIVE.

First of all, let me give you a history of ARAGAMI THE RAGING GOD OF BATTLE(aka: Aragami:duel) . This film was shot as a challenge/wager with the director of 2LDK, the rules being: shoot and effect the film in 7 days, 2-3 actors, one room and 1 character has to die. I heard Kitamura actually wrote this while he was shooting Azumi.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Aragami: The Raging God of Battle! Click Here

The fable is about 2 wounded samurai who fled to a remote temple fleeing from unseen enemies. They are greeted by a mysterious woman before losing consciousness. One samurai dies while the other samurai(TAKAO OSAWA, SKY HIGH) wakes healed from all wounds. He is greeted and fed by the lord of the temple(MASAYA KATO, Fighter in the wind) . Afterwards, he is told that he is in fact a Tengu, or an Aragami who rules that mountain and feeds on human flesh for sustenance. the so-called lord of the temple has been waiting for a safe opponent to ruin him in single combat because he has lived too long.

SPOILER ALERT: It is said that if you are fed human liver and depending on who cooks it, like the mysterious, nameless woman,(kanae Uotani, who is fair, THE MESSENGER, SKY HIGH) a human being may become almost immortal. Also, it was never proven, but the lord of the temple also stated that he is celebrated throughout the land with the name of MIYAMOTO MUSASHI(the greatest swordsman in Japanese history) There is also a gargantuan cameo appearance by the character(TAK SAKAGUCHI) in versus, if you gape closely, even the katana sword in Versus was weak by one of the combatants. I guess Kitamura intended this as well as obtain employ of Props from his other films.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Aragami: The Raging God of Battle! Click Here

The film is well-done. No conversation is wasted, and it is well-acted. There is a lot of substantial chemistry among the actors, hence, for a 79 petite film, it is never wearisome, and the sword fight at the kill is among the best I’ve seen. Forget Anakin vs. Kenobi, this can be the fight of the year. [...]

I would yell watching it in current Japanese dialogue, it maintains the conclude and excitement as it was intended to be.

I highly recommend ARAGAMI if you are a samurai/adventure fan, or if you specially like Kitamura’s films. I bought it w/out renting it, and I was blissful I did!! Like Masaya Kato says: “Things aren’t always what it seems” . People expected a faded brainless film for a movie shot in 7 days, but this film is better than most of the films made in a year.

Delight In!!Aragami wins over 2LDK in my understanding.

Now if only Hollywood directors will do a challenge movie made in 7 days…

The first thing to remember about this movie is that it was the other half of the “movie duel” with 2LDK. The movie was shot in about a week on half the budget it should have had. The script was tight and the acting was estimable. The movie had tension, humor, drama and plenty of action. The actor who portrayed Aragami was a mixture of Antonio Banderas, Johnny Depp, and limited bit of Brad Pitt. Very frigid dude. You could declare he was comfortable in the role. And the ending…WOW!

This movie will pause in my collection. A clear must-see!!!

I have to agree with the reviewer who complained about the “butchered” soundtrack. I grew up with “Sixteen Candles” — I’ve seen it so many times I practically know it by heart — and the songs are as remarkable a fraction of the movie as the dialogue. I wonder if someone forgot to collect permission to exercise some of the songs when the unusual movie was released — but that wouldn’t account for the cheezed-up “muzak” version of the opening credit music. And why substitute “Strangers in the Night” for “Current York, Unusual York” as background music for the post-party conversation between Jake and The Geek? The replacement music, as a whole, seems thrown together — the songs are obviously meant to sound “almost like” the originals but for anyone who really knows the movie “almost like” fair doesn’t slice it. The most awkward moment is when the family is leaving the house the morning of Ginny’s wedding. In the unusual version of the film, David Bowie’s “Young American” is playing in the background as the family piles into two cars. In this version, there is NO music playing — the family enters the cars in silence. What extinct to be a amusing, mercurial scene now seems agonizingly drawn out.

“Sixteen Candles” is aloof a colossal movie, of course, and I’m satisfied that I have it in my DVD collection. But I found myself cringing every time a song was changed — I could barely concentrate on the diaglogue at times. (I don’t know what I would have done if the Thompson Twins’ “If you were here” was replaced at the raze of the movie; thankfully, it wasn’t.)

Sixteen Candles takes site basically over the course of one day when a family forgets the sweet sixteenth birthday of a girl amid the preparations for the oldest daughter’s wedding. The sixteen year feeble is played by the 80’s teen queen Molly Ringwald. It was the movie that helped her accept that title and is the best of her career. She plays the role of Samantha Baker with ease and charm. We feel all her range of emotions from the pain of being forgotten to the longing she feels for a boy, Jake Ryan, who she has a major crush on but doesn’t consider he knows that she’s alive. Puny does Samantha know that Jake wants to meet her and the movie goes through a series of come misses between the two. Anthony Michael Hall plays “The Geek” who is constantly hitting on Samantha. He acts like he is a man of the world, but really is elephantine of hot air. Mr. Hall is extremely comical and the scene where he gives Jake advice on women and eventually drives the prom queen home in Jake’s father’s Roll Royce are priceless. Both sets of Samantha’s grandparents are droll, one residence are the worriers and the other the carefree sort. Gedde Wannabe is droll as an exchange student who comes with one of the grandparents. He does lift the Asian stereotypes to the max but he comes across with a nice degree of charm. John and Joan Cusack present up in bit parts and the movie has a huge soundtrack. The Thompson Twins’ “Wish You Were Here” perfectly frames the ending scene where Jake and Samantha finally hook up. Sixteen Candles was the directorial debut of John Hughes and space the stage for the Brat Pack movies that would be the dominant teen movies of the 80’s. Unlike his other movies like The Breakfast Club, Sparkling In Pink or Some Kind Of Astonishing, Sixteen Candles isn’t pudgy of teen angst, self-examination and skepticism that the others are. It is a charming perceive at the life of a teenager that seems to be the most true.

Is Ashley and Kisha: Finding The Good Fit a film about two fine, shaded lesbian lovers from the South? Yes. Yes it is.

It’s also a film about the ache of longing to be with someone very particular, the aesthetic tension of the drag, the thrill of seduction, and the disarming sweetness of romance. It’s a film about losing your heart, falling in cherish and in lust, and the joyous belly swooping pleasure of finding the good fit with someone who loves and desires you for who and what you are.

This tenderhearted, beautifully sexy film is positive to score the fair fit with audiences everywhere. I also recommend Tony’s Matt and Khym: Better Than Ever (Valid People, Right Life, Accurate Sex series)

I’ve approach to like the Comstock formula immensely. As in his other videos, this starts with an interview between the two lovers and an unseen, unheard presence off camera. For this couple, that brings out the first days of their relationship, with all the shyness and awkwardness I’ve experienced in my contain beginnings. They had another hurdle to distinct, in addition to all the usual: it had never occurred to Kisha to have a relationship with a woman. Quite the opposite. It took a while for Ashley to work her procedure into Kisha’s heart – and into her pants. It finally happened, though, and the sparks they struck seem to have welded them together.

At moments throughout the interview, we explore brief cuts to their lovemaking. Then, in the second half of the video, we perceive them play out their passion in plump. The two resplendent women offer a peruse in contrasts – Ashley, athletic and fine-featured, and Kisha, curvy and with sensuous lips. Together, they form an shapely couple, and their excitement only makes them more fair. Sex between them is loving and giving; for me, that’s what sets erotica apart from smut, the central interest that each has in the other’s happiness, and that they roar to the viewer. Once their lovemaking has peaked and a quieter mood settles in, we return to the interview for a moment.

This certainly isn’t for anyone timorous about physical affection, or for people establish off by affection between women. Although magnificent and erotic, it isn’t really about sex, either. It’s about what bonds couples together. Even I, as a straight male, could peruse echoes of my have relationship in theirs. I’m grateful to these two charming women for sharing their closeness.

This video series is highly recommended for any serious Beatle fan! While I agree that you can’t say it all in just 8 hours, all 4 beatles share stuff you won’t find in any book on the Beatles.

Tape 1 begins with a video collage of their history, features their youthful beginnings, days in Hamburg, how Ringo joined the band, and their rise to the top in England.

Tape 2 shows their growth as a band, talks on their BBC sessions, performing for the Queen, stories about touring, and some hilarious TV segments!

Tape 3 begins with their introduction into America, talks about their performance on the Ed Sullivan Show, Ringo’s tonsilitis, and their 1st movie A Hard Day’s Night.

Tape 4 talks about the pressures of touring, drugs, Dylan, the making of Help!, the inspiration for Yesterday, and winning the MBE award.

Tape 5 talks about their Shea Stadium performance, meeting Elvis, Rubber Soul and Revolver.

Tape 6 talks on the events that led to the Beatles’ final tour in 1966 (the Philippines and John’s remarks about Jesus), Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane,Sgt. Pepper, and their holiday in Greece.

Tape 7 starts with the One World performance of “All You Need Is Love”, and talks about the Maharishi, the death of Brian Epstein, Magical Mystery Tour, the opening of Apple, Yellow Submarine, and John’s new companion, Yoko Ono.

Tape 8 begins with the White Album, discusses the closing and dissolution of Apple, Hey Jude, Let It Be, Paul’s marriage to Linda, John’s marriage to Yoko, George and John’s drug busts, Abbey Road, and the Free As a Bird video (what? Real Love isn’t included! ).

A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

Back in January 2000, I reviewed this box set here (see “If You Liked the TV Special, You’ll Love This!”). 3 years later, many Beatles fans’ prayers (including my own) have been answered with the release of this video library in DVD form. Rather than resay what I said back then, I just thought I’d write with a different perspective. The opening statement is from the liner notes of Derek Taylor, who served as the Beatles’ press agent.

To answer a recent review, here’s what’s on it: performances of the Beatles live in concert and television performances (not complete concerts), some original videos, narrated by Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, the late George Harrison (who was still around during the making of this documentary) and the late John Lennon (his comments are culled by old interviews), excerpts from early recordings, studio outtakes, press conferences and all 5 of their movies and finally, over 30 complete Beatles tracks (By the way, “Real Love” is included in this edition).

The sound quality is superior here than the original VHS (and you have the option of LPCM Stereo, Dolby Digital surround sound and DTS 5.1 surround sound). You also have the option of subtitles in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese (Brazilian and European). Just don’t expect your Linguistics teachers to be impressed with how many French or Spanish words you learned while watching this!

It is a bit of a shame that individual tracks weren’t assembled for complete songs. Oh well, a minour disappointment! Keep in mind that the 8 video VHS box set was actually pricier than the 5 DVD box set back when it was released in 1996 (I remember paying over [money] for mine!).

Then of course, there’s the Special Features DVD. In addition to the “Real Love” video (which wasn’t included on the original VHS edition), there’s a segment in which Paul, George and Ringo all gather together in 1994 to discuss the old days and jam out on old songs. The 3 are also featured here in 1995 discussing with George Martin, their producer, the choosing of different outtakes on the 3 Anthology CD’s and studio techniques they used during the original recording sessions. Paul, George and Ringo also discuss with Jeff Lynne how a Beatles mini-”reunion” took place with 2 John Lennon demos (“Free As a Bird” and “Real Love”). Also, there’s a section on how many hours of interviews and classic footage came together for this documentary and a feature on how the “Free as a Bird” video was made.

Give yourself at least 2 weeks to enjoy as Derek Taylor once put it these “10 hours of unchallengable evidence” of the Beatles’ legacy, which continues even to this day.

On the surface, this is one of those “come back in time to save the future” movies. It later becomes, a character driven comedy, with some serious, and some downright zany moments. Karin Aoi (it seems like they rehash a lot of familiar anime partial names in this) is a DNA changing specialist from the future, sent to prevent Junta (a typical anime clueless lad) from becoming the Mega Playboy. The Mega Playboy, (Somehow I think the Japanese translation was a little different) is one who is known to have impregnated 100 different women, helping to create a population that’s out of control in the future. On top of that, all his offspring carry his “Mega” gene, and have continued the tradition of “over-creation”.

Somehow this “Mega” gene when active makes Junta irresistible to most women. The only one who seems immune is Ami, his childhood friend. Like most “time altering” movies, the question always seems to come down to what came first, “the chicken or the egg”. When Karin shoots Junta with the wrong DNA changing bullet, she soon finds out the mistake had a big consequence. It may have been she who created the one-man population explosion in the first place. The only good news is the change is not “stable” yet.

Junta has another problem, getting close to women has always made him throw up. When he’s not “Mega” transformed, he somehow manages to put a damper on his love life, by losing his lunch at the most inopportune times. Much of the series involves Karin trying to get Junta, and Ami together. It seems Ami, is the only woman who seems to help him control his “Mega” impulse. Getting in the way are other girls attracted to Junta by the Mega Playboy transformations. Things are futher complicated when they the girls include Ami’s best friend. Karin tries to keep them apart, unfortunately, she falls victim of his “Mega” charms herself.

This series plays a lot like its creators series Video Girl Ai. The characters are drawn similarly and react much the same as might be expected. Like much of the early books in the “Ai” series it’s hilariously funny and can be touching at times. Unfortunately, like the Video Girl manga, the plot gets drawn out. In order to search for an ending the author puts in way too much pointless action. The “bad guy” characters inserted in the last few episodes do little to enhance the series.

This anime is so funny and entertaining! I consider it to be a comedy more than anything else! The story is quite fantastic, with girls coming from the future, boys allergic to girls in a future world, that a single guy, will make a big mess with so many heirs, but that’s what makes this anime so cool!

“The Sun Also Rises” was 20th Century Fox’s big-budget ‘prestige’ film

for 1957, based on Ernest Hemingway’s first new, shot on spot in Paris and Mexico (substituting for Spain), and starring the studio’s long-reigning superstar, Tyrone Power, surrounded by legendary actors (Ava Gardner, Errol Flynn, Mel Ferrer, and Eddie Albert) . With all the talent assembled in front of and slack the camera, producer Darryl F. Zanuck felt confident that the film would be an enduring classic for both his possess independent company, and his studio.

It wasn’t, unfortunately…

The film’s quandary was a fundamental one; the ‘Lost Generation’

Hemingway wrote of were disillusioned young Americans, who, shattered

by the apprehension and brutality of the ‘Great War’, lost their innocence, and became a ‘live speedily, die young’ crowd of expatriates, settling in Paris. These were men and women calm in their twenties and thirties…yet the film’s stars were all ten to twenty years older! The most glaring case can be seen in the film’s star, Tyrone Power. As newspaperman Jake Barnes, a vet whose war injuries render him impotent, unable to satisfy the woman he loves (Ava Gardner), and, therefore, the ‘perfect’ observer of her romantic entanglements with other men, Power seems more a victim of a midlife crisis than a young man devastated about losing his manhood. In his next-to-last film, Power, at 44, was aging badly, his hair thinning and his slender, ‘movie idol’ pleasant looks surrendering to a middle-aged paunch. Only when he smiles do the years seem to retract, a bit, and the “too comely to be right” younger man appears. Adding to his physical deterioration was an undiagnosed heart condition, which would slay him, in less than two years.

His co-star, Ava Gardner, at 35, was going through a decline, as well, but, like her character, Lady Brett Ashley, her vices were the cause of her self-destruction. Both Brett and Ava were hedonistic women too fond of booze, bullfighters, and nightlife, and Ava’s once-classic features were beginning to gain bags and wrinkles that makeup and lighting couldn’t screen.

Coming off best are Errol Flynn and Eddie Albert. Flynn, at 48, long past his ‘glamorous’ prime (he and Power had been Hollywood’s best-looking ’swashbucklers’ of the early 40s), had become a very credible character actor, usually portraying variations of himself. His ‘Mike Campbell’, an alcoholic, impoverished but clinging to his pride, was, sadly, a dead-on assessment of Errol Flynn, as well. Like Power, he would be wearisome in two years, a victim of his maintain excesses. On the other hand, Eddie Albert, at 49, had long been health-conscious, and his performance as a drunk was simply gracious acting; paired with Flynn, they ’steal’ the film, particularly during the noted Pamplona bull hasten, when the duo skim for their lives (while guzzling wine), and Flynn attempts to expend a dreadful check as a cape to ‘fight’ a bull!

The drama seems overdrawn, the romance lacks ‘fire’, Robert Evans as a young bullfighter is abominable, and the resolution is a hollow one. Even with the elegant scenery, Hugo Friedhofer’s soaring film bag, and Henry King’s skill as a director, the film fails to generate more than a curiosity value, at the survey of so many actors, past their prime, trying to seem youthful and dynamic.

The DVD offers many ‘added features’, including ‘behind the scenes’ photos of Power, Flynn, and Gardner, and director Henry King’s audio reminiscences of the production, possibly more fascinating than the feature, itself.

All-in-all, an ambitious misfire!

The 1926 “Sun Also Rises” was Ernest Hemingway’s first full-length unique. In the 1957 movie-version, Hollywood stars relate Hemingway’s “Lost Generation”. Tyrone Power heads the cast as American news journalist Jake Barnes, who, after a World War I injury that has left him impotent, re-locates to Paris. Barnes links up with other lost souls, including the nymphomaniacal Lady Ashley(Ava Gardner) and the irresponsible drunkard Mike Campbell(Errol Flynn) . Barnes and his friends travel to Spain, and participate in the annual Pamplona running-of-the-bulls. The fun is impartial beginning. The cast includes Mel Ferrer, Eddie Albert, and Henry Daniell. The film’s best performance is delivered by Errol Flynn. It has been said that, in his role of the hedonistic, hard-drinking Mike Campbell, that he was merely playing himself. Accurate or not, Hollywood took note; a film career was re-vitalized. His engaging performance here is classic. Sadly, decay from alcohol dimmed his future. He died two years later(Tyrone Power himself died two years later shooting “Solomon and Sheba” of a hear attack) . Filmed on residence in Pamplona, Paris, Biarritz, and Mexico, “THe Sun Also Rises” was budgeted at $5 million. This effect modern DVD transfer is the second DVD release, as it was also produced in August 2006, in a bare-bones edition. Cinema Club’s fresh DVD features many extras: Commentary by Frank Thompson, a conversation with director Henry King, a documentary on the production, the restoration, and Hemingway. There is also a trailer and a stills gallery. Colors are shiny. Blacks are pitch. This is outstanding, as the DVD is a rude bitrate, single-layered disc. Audio is adequate but without considerable range. “The Sun Also Rises” is the classic legend of American ex-patriates caught up in dancing, parties, and drinking-til-dawn. What fun. What sadness. As the recount ends, one character sums it all up: “It’s all like a improbable nightmare. I acquire in anything. Including nightmares..”
